A weekend At Sun Escape (1).png

We are taking every precaution to remove the sun from your weekend fun. Here are the ways we are modifying and adapting.

Protective Coverings on Exposed Program Area Windows & Cabins

Thick protective cloth will be hung over windows near all vulnerable facility entrances and windows that may let in sunlight during regular camp hours. The same coverings are placed over all exposed common areas in our 16 cabins.

Less vulnerable areas may use the existing blinds for protection. In rare cases, some highly placed windows may not be able to be covered.

Families will be notified in advance where those windows are and camp programming will be adjusted to the best of our ability to take place in those areas when sun exposure is limited.

Note: the protective coverings are 100% black out drapes and are made out of polyester.

Victory Junction Shuttle Bus

Families will have access to mini buses to assist getting from cabin row and certain facilities during peak sunny hours. One side of the bus’ windows will be covered with the same protective coverings as our program windows.

Note: Most of your expected walking will be under covered structures or with very minimal exposure that should be okay for the majority of our families

Sun Umbrellas & UPF Camp Shirts

Sun Escape has teamed up with Breeze Life to provide every photosensitive camper with a sun umbrella featuring a built-in mister that they can take home. Our official camp shirt is printed on a lightweight long sleeve with an attached hood that is made specifically with UPF material from Free Sun Shields.

Note: Most of your expected walking will be under covered structures or with very minimal exposure that should be okay for the majority of our campers.

Noting All Interior Lighting

We track all the wattage in the Victory Junction facilities and program areas. Most lighting can be turned off by request. This information is included with each program area’s sun precaution details below.

Note: Families will receive an email during the week of camp containing the UV meter readings for all our indoor facilities equipped with sun protective coverings. This is a new initiative for 2026, and the data is delayed as the coverings will be installed in the week leading up to camp.

Our Sun Precaution Summary

A review what to expect and what to know before Sun Escape Weekend. Everyone’s photosensitivity is different. For our camp families who need to be cautious about certain indoor lighting, information regarding the bulbs used in key program areas during the weekend is included.

What is Foot Candle Data?

A foot-candle is a measurement of light intensity. Please use the following key to better understand the severity of the lighting in Sun Escape’s program areas.

Click HERE to learn more about foot-candle measurements

Unobstructed sunlight: 10,000 FC

Overcast sunlight: 100 FC

Visually intensive workspace: 200 FC

Residential space (working): 70-90 FC

Residential space (living): 5-40 FC

Where are you most vulnerable

And how we are addressing those difficulties for 2026

The Sun Escape Arrival Bus

Our Thursday bus that takes camp families from our Marriott Hotel pick up spot to Victory Junction has tinted windows but could frustrate our most photosensitive passengers. In 2026 we will be looking to add pop up portable sun shades in bus seats for parents to use if necessary. These umbrella like creations are similar to the items placed in the windshields of parked cars.

Walking To and From Your Cabin

While a protective shuttle bus can be called by your assigned volunteer to pick you up, families may still find themselves in a position of having to walk a distance to reach their cabin or from their cabin to Victory Circle (where most of our programming and Fuel Stop takes place). In 2026 we will be utilizing the Adam’s Race Shop Facility as a short cut, utilizing the stairs to the second floor that exits out onto the cabin row path to cut down sun exposure.

Direct Sunlight Under the Victory Circle Overpass

A majority of walking is done alongside our Victory Circle, which has a shaded cover. As the sun begins to set, direct light becomes visible. In 2026 we will be placing large pop up walls along the exposed side of the walk path.

Random Sunlight From the Opening of the Petting Zoo Doors

Due to the placement of the barn doors, sunlight streams in whenever someone comes and goes. The elevated tinted windows of the barn doors make it challenging to cover them and also hinder visibility of campers approaching. In 2026, we plan to construct a temporary second door, enveloped by drapes on all sides, ensuring that it remains closed before families completely enter or exit the petting zoo area.

And Most importantly…

You are a hero battling the sun every weekend, don’t think you have to be one at camp.

During the weekend, if you or your family would feel comfortable with more sun modifications or something more specific we are happy to do whatever is possible.
